I Started dental nursing around eight years ago, after spending time working as an optical assistant and in hospitality. Both roles taught me a lot about customer service, organisation, and attention to detail, but I knew I wanted a career in a clinical setting where no two days were ever the same. I also needed a job that kept me on my feet – I would have gone crazy sitting down all day! Dentistry offered the perfect combination of variety, precision, and patient interaction.
When I joined The Row Dental, it immediately felt like the perfect fit. The multidisciplinary nature of the clinic means every day brings something new, whether it’s a complex treatment plan, a cosmetic procedure, or a routine check-up. It’s also a place where teamwork and professional development are valued, which makes it incredibly rewarding to be part of the team.
“Working alongside the dentists gives me insight into care planning and allows me to anticipate what the team will need, especially during complex cases.”
As Head Nurse, my day often begins the evening before. I like to set everything up so that the clinic can run smoothly from the first patient of the day. This includes checking the LDU [Local Decontamination Clinic] is clean, organised, and fully prepared, reviewing stock levels, and placing any orders if needed. I also work through urgent emails and messages to make sure nothing is overlooked. A key part of my prep is managing incoming lab work – verifying that everything is accurate, complete, and ready for the dentists. For larger treatments, such as implants and veneer fits, I coordinate all the instruments and lab components required to ensure everything runs seamlessly. Preparing the day before gives the whole team confidence and allows us to start each morning feeling calm, focused, and ready for our patients.
Our mornings officially start at 8:30 am with a team huddle. Even though it’s brief, this meeting is essential. We review the day ahead: which dentists are seeing which patients, any special cases, and any adjustments to the rota. It’s a chance to align the team, make sure everyone knows their roles, and anticipate any challenges before the first patient arrives. I always enjoy this time because it’s collaborative and sets a positive tone for the day.
Managing the nursing team is one of my core responsibilities. I check in regularly with the team, answer questions, and make sure everyone knows their schedule. Our alternating rota ensures that nurses gain experience with different dentists and treatments, which keeps the role varied and helps maintain a smooth patient flow. I also spend time supporting and mentoring new staff, from reviewing applications to welcoming them into the team and helping them settle in. Supporting the growth and development of our dental nurses is just as important to me as managing the day-to-day operations.
Throughout the day, I monitor stock levels and make sure we have everything required for procedures. Nothing is more stressful than discovering a key instrument is missing mid-treatment, so organisation is key. I also assist chairside when needed, which helps me stay connected to patient care and understand any challenges the team may face during procedures. Working alongside the dentists gives me insight into care planning and allows me to anticipate what the team will need, especially during complex cases.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is the variety. No two days are the same. One day I may be preparing instruments for an implant surgery, the next I’m assisting with a cosmetic veneer fit, and the next I might be supporting routine hygiene appointments. I also spend time coordinating lab work, liaising with dental technicians, and ensuring every case is progressing smoothly. This variety keeps me engaged and constantly learning.
By the end of the day, I review the schedule for the next day, make any adjustments needed, and ensure the LDU is left in order for the team to start fresh in the morning. It’s a busy role, but it’s incredibly satisfying to know that my planning and support make a difference to both patients and colleagues.
When I’m not at work, I’m at home with my two cats, Jude and Willow. Living near the beach, I often take Saturday mornings to stroll along the shore; it’s a great way to get my steps in and treat myself to a coffee while enjoying the fresh air. I also love cosy days at home, curled up with my cats, which helps me recharge for the week ahead.
Looking to the future, I’m excited to continue developing my skills and knowledge in dentistry. The Row Dental has already provided so many opportunities for growth, and I’m eager to see where the next few years take my role. Whether it’s exploring new procedures, supporting my team, or contributing to patient care in innovative ways, I feel fortunate to be part of a clinic that values both professional excellence and personal development. Dentistry is challenging, fast-paced, and endlessly rewarding, and I can’t imagine a better place to continue my journey.
