Help! I’m Scared of the Dentist!

Does the thought of visiting the dentist make your palms sweat?

Maybe even the prospect of calling to arrange an appointment is enough to bring on the hives.

If you answered yes, you’re not alone.

According to Anxiety UK, around half (53%) of the UK population is scared or nervous about visiting the dentist.

If you’re one of them, we think you might be surprised at how much visiting The Row feels different to the dental appointments you’re used to.

Why Overcoming Your Nerves is Good for Oral Health

Facing our fears is never easy. So, if you’re nervous about the dentist, it’s probably tempting to put off appointments in the hope you’ll never have to sit in the dreaded dentist’s chair.

But here’s the problem: When you avoid regular check-ups and cleanings, minor problems can escalate into more significant issues, which then require lengthier treatment.

So you could end up visiting your least favourite place more frequently—and for longer!

Let’s look at some of the treatments and strategies on offer that make patients travel from far and wide to experience phobia-friendly dentistry here at Edinburgh’s favourite dental clinic.

Clinical? Not The Row!

For many people with dental anxiety, the sights, sounds, and smells associated with a traditional dental practice can trigger feelings of fear and unease.

At The Row, we’ve created an environment that breaks from the conventional, providing a calming, welcoming space that feels anything but clinical.

Visit The Row, and you’ll find the harsh fluorescent lighting and clinical décor you’re used to replaced by a beautiful, modern interior with soothing colours and soft lighting.

The overall effect is closer to a calming spa than a busy dental practice—talk about relaxing!

Take a Look Around

We believe familiarity breeds comfort, so we want you to feel at home on The Row even before sitting in the dental chair. By exploring our practice, meeting our team, and discussing your concerns, you’ll be better prepared to take the next step in your dental journey when you feel ready.

We encourage you to schedule a time to come and meet our caring, compassionate team in person. This initial visit is all about you—an opportunity to express your concerns, ask questions, and get to know us in a relaxed, pressure-free environment.

Communication

At The Row, communication is the key to helping you feel more in control. We encourage you to discuss your anxieties openly and triggers with our team so we can work together to create a personalised strategy that puts you at ease.

During your initial consultation, we’ll listen to your concerns and understand the specific aspects of dental treatment that trigger your anxiety. Whether it’s a fear of needles, the sound of the drill, or a sense of vulnerability, we’ll work with you to identify your unique triggers and develop a plan to address them.

One effective strategy we often employ is using hand gestures to signal when things become overwhelming. For example, you and your dentist might agree on a specific hand signal that means “stop” or “I need a break.”

Some patients find it helpful to establish a “time-out” signal, allowing them to pause during treatment to relax and regain composure.

Our goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where you feel heard, understood, and in control.

So don’t hesitate to speak up, share your concerns, and work with us to create a dental experience that feels comfortable, manageable, and even enjoyable.

What Works for You Works for Us!

Every patient is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. That’s why we’ve created a judgment-free zone where the team is open to whatever strategies and techniques help you feel more at ease.

If listening to relaxing music helps calm your nerves, feel free to bring your headphones and your favourite playlist.

If watching your favourite series on Netflix helps take your mind off the treatment, bring your mobile device and headphones.

If you’d like to bring a friend or family member to your appointment, they are more than welcome.

Breathing exercises, meditation, even singing—we’ve seen it all. And if it works for you, it works for us!
